Outreach

St. Paul’s boasts a wide range of Outreach Ministries. Some of these are operated directly by the congregation or in its name, such as our Food Pantry, Clothing Bank, Counseling Service, Karate Club, Music Ministry, and the A Cup of Cold Water project, an exciting tutoring program at the neighboring Carter and McCrae Elementary School, which utilizes volunteers from the church and the Willow Valley community in remedial reading and mathematics four days each week.

Many other outreach efforts are done in partnership with other groups. Of special significance is the Super Cupboard program under the auspices of LUMINA (Lancaster United Methodist Inner City Alliance) and in association with Penn State University. This program reaches out to low income families and teaches participants about nutrition, food safety, and proper food preparation. A child-care service is provided at the church so that the mothers attending can devote their full attention to the program. Through LUMINA we also work with other UMC congregations to host Kids Night, a Monday evening program of Christian education and recreation for children in grades 1 through 6.

Through Project Forward Leap we support a private non-profit foundation in its efforts to provide a gifted education for disadvantaged students in Lancaster. This Saturday morning program involves tutoring and computer enhanced learning. We offer our facilities and volunteers as a Shalom Partner, in an evening tutoring program based at three neighborhood church sites. We also partner with the Water Street Rescue Mission in a Pre-School initiative, called Wonder Club.

Our spacious facility is also home to weekly meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, two Girl Scout Troops, and Release Time, an ecumenical Christian education outreach program.

Programs are being conceived to respond to needs in the area of family life education, such as child-care and parenting-skill training.
